Job description

A deck officer is responsible for safely loading their boat and collecting fares based on vehicle prices while providing excellent customer service. Duties include monitoring traffic, opening and closing the bridge, controlling lighting and signaling equipment, inspecting the bridge for structural integrity, and performing maintenance work. The deck officer must be able to work in all weather conditions.

Job description

Captains manage and command self-propelled vessels used to transport passengers on the Ottawa River, and supervise and coordinate the activities of deckhands. Captains are responsible for the safety of everyone on board.

Mandatory requirements - Captain's license for vessels over 60 tons issued by Transport Canada - a combination of experience and the DVS course may be considered.

Type of employment: Full time

Experience: Maritime transport: 1 year (preferred)

License/certificate: 60-ton Captain's Certificate issued by Transport Canada (required)

Requirements

  • Plan and execute the safe passage of the vessel using navigational aids;;
  • Maintain the vessel's navigation equipment and instruments in good working order;;
  • Direct and supervise the loading and unloading of cargo;
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of deckhands;
  • Update the logbook and record crew activities, weather conditions, and river conditions;
  • Outdoor work, exposed to weather conditions;
  • Working in an enclosed vehicle or equipment;
  • Hazardous chemicals;
  • Extreme temperatures;
  • Hazardous conditions;
  • Working outdoors, sheltered from the weather.
